Thalidomide

I have just watched the Thalidomide programme on BBC2. It was both heartbreaking and inspiring.

One of the biggest legal aid cases in the late 50s and early 60s was for compensation for the Thalidomide children.

Thalidomide was prescribed to pregnant woman to combat morning sickness and help them sleep. The drug was withdrawn in 1961.

After ab 11 year legal battle, the families managed to secure an out-of-court settlement of £20million in 1973. It was as important then as it is now to protect the legal aid system.

Help save it. Sign the petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/david-cameron-uk-government-save-legal-aid-to-protect-access-to-justice-for-all
